Recent work (Sevigny et al (2016)) has been making the rounds on social media. I have seen exaggerated headlines such as "New drug that halts mental decline.." and "A cure for Alzheimer's" making the rounds.
So, what's the dealio, yo? Have we done it? Have we cured Alzheimer's? Let's get into the facts here ---
1. What's this drug called?
Aducanumab - it's marketed by Biogen.
2. How does it work?
This is a drug that targets aggregated beta-amyloid. (Click here for my review on amyloid).
3. How is it different from other drugs that have been tried?
Well, for one, it isn't a "drug" per se. It is an antibody which targets the aggregated beta-amyloid.
4. What's an antibody?
An antibody is something all our immune systems generate to fight off infection. Think of it as your Superman to a Lex Luther. An antibody's role is to identify bad stuff, bind to it, and neutralize it's threat.

Up, up and antibodyyyyy (I'll show myself out) |
5. Okay, so what did the study find?
The study found that in one year, patients who were given aducanumab showed less of the amyloid burden than placebo (not given the antibody). And, rather excitingly, this was a dose-dependent effect.
6. What's a dose-dependent effect?
It's a fancy way of saying, the greater the amount of aducanumab given, the better the patients seemed to do.
7. What did they measure?
They looked at amyloid in the brain as well as behavioral symptoms. Both improved dose-dependently with aducanumab.
8. Does this mean anyone suffering from Alzheimer's would benefit from this drug?
Not quite. The effects seemed most pronounced in those who were in early stages of AD?
9. Is this a cure for AD?
Too early to say. The sample size of this drug trial was small. Biogen is currently conducting Phase III drug trials (~1500 patients). Those results will become available in 2021. Also, important to note that the effect was in early stages of AD.
10. Why the hesitation, bro?
We have been here before. other drugs showed promise in Phase I/II trials only to show no effect in larger trials. Also, don't call me bro, bro.
11. So what's the takeaway?
Very promising data. But, if someone tells you that "they found a cure for Alzheimer's", tell them that statement is still premature.
ReplyDeleteFor those people who's relative are Alzheimer’s Disease sufferer and maybe reading this, I find it hard that people are still ignorant of herbal medicine when it comes to treating Alzheimer’s Disease.
I have been through many phases over the last couple of years since my father's diagnosis, he was 53 years old and had Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease and his diagnosis changed my life in many ways, I spend most of the time in denial and I keep thinking the tests were wrong. But deep down I knew they were correct. Though sharing his story is very difficult. He was always very successful in being able to accomplish anything he set his mind on doing. Alzheimer’s is a bitch of a disease. It began by robbing his recent memory, but it didn't stop there. It continues to steal, taking the most recent memories until it has pilfered all but the oldest memories, he experienced a decline in his ability to think, remember and make decisions. I feel a need to express my thoughts and feelings about how it affected his day to day living and how its deteriorated since despite the help of some wonderful medics and medicine.
I remind myself how lucky to come across Charanjit rychtova's herbal medicine which is able to control this disease without any side effect, I felt a moment of relief hoping that he is free from this ailment, and nothing compares to the healing power of nature. Now I believe almost every health problem can be addressed in one natural way or another. The only thing I wanted was for him to feel better. I’m proud to say my Dad is Alzheimer’s free. You can also contact him for more info. at charantova@gmail.com
This is a great write up, I was also a victim, having Alzheimer's disease for many years. My journey and diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease began when I was 58 years old. My medical condition was heart broken. The first thing I did was get myself informed. I was subjected to different medications including Donepezil, galantamine, by my doctors for treatment without the assurance of having a positive improvement. Despite my visit to several doctors my health wasn't getting better. Also I keep thinking there has to be another alternative to address this, using herbal remedy, this information reinforced my original gut feelings that I should not give up. I decided to look for another option to help my condition. I’ve made many lifelong friends when I was looking for a natural cure for my ailment. To say it gets better is an understatement. I find hope in the darkest of days when I saw a testimony of people talking about Dr. Charanjit's herbal product. I started having series of thoughts, thereafter I ordered his product and started using it, to give the Alzheimer's disease an aggressive approach, the symptoms progressively got better.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, everything seemed to be okay after a few weeks of starting the herbs, this was a pleasant surprise. I promised myself that I would stay strong. You sit living in fear of the reality what you may face, never really knowing what will happen until it does. I am indebted and decided to always share my experience.

In my own case it was just over four years ago when my Mum began to sound different on the phone. She lived back East with my siblings and my husband and I were living on the West coast and in phone calls it became apparent that my Mum's voice no longer had the same tones of excitement and humor that she used to; and instead it was very flat. At the same time she began to tell us about a situation at work that just didn't seem possible; she was complaining that a group of fellow workers were conspiring to get her. Although Mum had much academic success as a teenager, her behavior had become increasingly odd during the past years. She quit seeing her friends and no longer seemed to care about her appearance or social pursuits. She began wearing the same clothes each day and seldom bathed. She lived with several family members but rarely spoke to any of us. Obviously this whole story seemed very unbelievable and we sensed something was wrong but had no clue as to what it could be. We recommended that my Mum quit her job and look for something else - as we began to wonder if she had a "mental breakdown" and would get better once out of the stressful job situation.
ReplyDeleteIn the case of Mum, she was having persecurtory delusions, auditory hallucinations and negative symptoms that had lasted for at least Three years. All of these symptoms fit with a diagnosis of Dementia. Her story reflects a common case, in which a high-functioning young adult goes through a major decline in day-to-day skills. Although family and friends may feel this is a loss of the person they knew, the illness can be treated and a good outcome is possible as it all got better when we started using a herbal medicine for her through Aparajita.
My recommendation to people who are either wondering if they have Dementia or wondering if a friend or loved one has Dementia should contact aparajitatan@gmail.com. I think one of our key problems was that we didn't do this in the early days of my Mum's illness as we never thought of a natural alternative for her.
After months of my Dad's Alzheimer’s free, I think I owe the world a duty to share this testimony. It could help someone out there who needs to be free from Alzheimer’s like my Dad.
ReplyDeleteIt started as a minor difficulty following story-lines. I was scared when he started having Poor sleep and noticed confusion with time or place. First it was at the tonic phase till it became more complicated that I had to see our family doctor. That was when he was 63 years old. I had questions without answers. My friends who never understood what I was going through abandoned me because they were too embarrassed to associate with him. The Confusion with time or places became frequent that was causing him severe discomfort everyday. It got more complicated that I had to make effort so it will not lead to heart disease according to research. I went in search for a cure because I was fed up of treatments and drugs. A lot of folks told me there was no cure to Alzheimer’s; that the best I could get was treatment to manage it, but I just refused to believe them. Thankfully, I read about Herbal medication for Alzheimer’s cure. I discussed with my doctor, he permitted me to try if it will work because Western Medication had dealt with him badly. When we started using Herbal Medication the confused about things which happens a few hours ago or yesterday was no longer frequent! Within 2months, I noticed tremendous changes he never had for 2 months of using English Medicine. For 9 months and counting, he have never had confusion about things which happens a few hours ago or yesterday not even for a second. I have been reaching out to people with Alzheimer’s telling them our story how they can get cured through Herbal medication that worked for my Dad. curetoalzheimer.blogspot.com You may contact the doctor via charantova@gmail.com
DOES HERBS WORK FOR DEMENTIA?
ReplyDeleteThis was the same question that prompted me to read further a testimony I saw on a blog. I would like to tell a story - hoping it will be useful to others - of my struggles and achievements with Dementia. I was diagnosed a little over 4 years ago, No doctors I met have any treatment or even suggestions apart western medications. I even sought advice on Youtube, to no avail. After using the conventional approach to medication treatment without improvement. I am glad something happens fast. There have been suicides due to people not being able to continue on living with the endless memory challenges. It is horrible. I learned about Dr. charanjit herbal medicine that works effectively for me without any negative effects. I have returned back to my normal life and I hope that the symptoms do not return again, It really helped me! If you have Dementia kindly contact Dr. Charanjit for help and necessary solution (charantova@gmail.com)
I can’t forget in a hurry my Mom's horrible years of fight with Mental ailment (Alzheimer). My Mom got really sick around Christmas that year. When I saw her in the hospital with all those tubes, I just lost it. I got so hysterical that I had to be escorted out. Soon after that, I got into that altercation with my neighbor and was sent to jail. When I got out of jail, Her symptoms were acting up and I felt so angry. Dad had already taken her to a state psychiatric hospital. I was really nervous, but I talked to a psychiatrist there who made me feel comfortable. For the first time, she opened up about what she was experiencing—the voices, not being able to remember things, the paranoia. She said, “Your mom is battling Alzheimer.” I didn’t even know what that meant.
ReplyDeleteHe suggested that when she got out of the hospital and off the treatments she was taking there, we try a new treatment for Alzheimer. After weighing the risks and benefits, we both agreed the treatment, given through monthly injections, might help control her symptoms. Meanwhile, I made friends, and gained insight into her illness. During the week, there were movies, cooking classes and education sessions about her disease—basically, activities to help people like her get back into society. I learned about Alzheimer and what some of her triggers were. All told, she stayed there for two months and we left, I was taking her for doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping. It was hard, especially when her birthday passed, I still helped her walk, fix her food and dress her which made me sad because she was very active at 69 until the illness struck her.
I came across a herbal medication sometimes last year called zomo but before we started the treatment, we started a day rehabilitation program, and also started the new medication with zomo. I was working hard to achieve my care goals by following the treatment plan. Her symptoms got under control within three months, as she started feeling better. First she regained interest in the things she used to enjoy, like calling/visiting our family and friends for lunch and going for walks in the park and grocery shopping. I will never forget what I went through, or what it took for her to get here. I don’t take any of it for granted. I consider myself an advocate for people who don’t have any knowledge about this herbal medicine. To anyone who’s taken the time to read this that may be struggling with this awful ailment (Alzheimer), reach out, share, I guarantee you reach out to charantova@gmail.com, and know, that as lonely as you may feel, as hopeless as you believe things are, please know, that there are so many patients out there going through same and you are never alone! reach out to him so you could share your own testimony to let others know there is hope.
